Pole Dancing Finesse

Pole dancing to the music of a 20-piece live orchestra, including violins? Yes, says one Philippine pole dance troupe that seeks respect for its art and athleticism. Against the background of women around the world turning to pole dancing as a form of exercise, the Manila-based group Polecats proved at a recent week-end show that the performances are no longer only for strip clubs and sleazy bars - or just for women, either.

As the orchestra played classical-style arrangements of modern songs, dancers of both genders swung and climbed gracefully up 4m poles, combining flexibility, strength, and moves bordering on acrobatics, with sensuality. "You don't go to Cirque du Soleil to get turned on, although maybe you will, but I just want people to see that we're really good at what we do, and not just hot," said Christina Dy, the Polecat's director.

"Routines involving swings and twirls require balance, concentration and a high level of technical skills, and that is what audiences should appreciate," she added. "The group has gathered male performers, as well as male viewers, by focusing on the athletic aspects of performing," said Job Bautista, the first man to become a regular Polecats member. "Now here in the Philippines we're trying to promote the more acrobatic type of pole dancing, which we Polecats think is more suited to men," he said. (Reuters)

Fun Days At The KLDA Potluck Sundays

The Kuala Lumpur Dancers' Association (KLDA) organizes a potluck at its premises in Wisma OCM at Jalan Hang Jebat, KL on the last Sunday of every month. The aim of this event which is open to members and non-members is to promote a sense of camaraderie among fellow dancers. These events are well attended by many who come to join in the merriment, partake of the smorgasbord of culinary delights and enjoy themselves on the dance floor. At these afternoon gatherings there will also be dance demonstrations by members and guest performers. The guests who had performed at these gatherings included some well known dance instructors from among the many dance schools in the Klang Valley.

Ming Pang and her group of swingers from KL Swing! introduced us to the American swing dances by showcasing the lindy hop and shim sham at one potluck this year. Timothy Low and his associates from SACAsia Sdn Bhd performed a salsa and promoted their "Salsa Cruise Asia 2009" during one recent event. Last month, we were entertained to bachatango and zouk performances by Jenni Tan and her team from New Star Studio. At this coming potluck on September 27, Sai Mun and his crew from SMASH Studio will be putting up a new jazz dance routine. For those who are interested to perform at the monthly potluck events, please contact C C Lai, the president of the KLDA at 012-2029991.

And talking of performances, the showtime at the "KLDA Gala Ball 2009" which was held at the KLDA on August 8 is the talk of the town amongst the dance fraternity. Due to repeated requests for an encore from those who missed the show, there will be a repeat of the show on September 26 at the same venue. The performances will basically be the same except for a couple of minor changes. This time it will be a no-frills event in which finger food will be served, with free flow of mineral water. As usual, there will be general dancing from 7.00 pm till 12.00 midnight. Tickets priced at RM40 each are available from the KLDA or at the door. Lions Prowl The Streets During Chinese New Year

Today, the Chinese community and those of Chinese ancestry throughout the world will be celebrating the Chinese New Year. This year is the Year Of The Ox according to the Chinese zodiac. Known also as the Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival, this festival is celebrated as well in Vietnam (where it is known as Tet), Mongolia, North Korea and South Korea. The Lunar New Year used to be celebrated in Japan but after the Second World War, the Japanese discontinued celebrating the Lunar New Year in favour of the Gregorian New Year which falls on January 1 every year. I would like to wish those celebrating this festival A Happy And Prosperous New Year. Gong Xi Fa Cai! (meaning "May You Be Prosperous" in Chinese.)

During the Chinese New Year festive season, lion dance troupes will be putting up performances at dwellings and business establishments. How did the lion dance come to be associated with China when the lion is not native to China? According to Chinese historians, about 2000 years ago during the Han Dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD), the Shah of Persia (present day Iran) through his emissaries presented the Emperor of China with a pair of young lions. The Chinese had never seen lions before and became fascinated with these magnificent beasts. It was from watching and mimicking the movements and playful antics of the lions that the lion dance was created and evolved to what it is today.

Chinese lion dances can be categorised into 2 styles - the Northern (China) and the Southern (China). The northern lion has a large head, is shaggy in appearance with red, orange and yellow fur (sometimes with green fur for the female lion). The northern lion dance is mainly acrobatic and is performed as an entertainment with the lion usually seen balancing on a giant ball. The southern lion has a distinctive head and lively facial movements. It has big eyes, eyelids that can flutter, ears that can move and a mouth that can open and close. It comes in a wide variety of colours and is performed to usher in good luck and drive sway evil spirits. The southern lion dance is boisterous and is accompanied by the loud beating of a drum, the hitting of gongs and the clashing of cymbals.

Lion dance competitions of the Southern style featuring daring acrobatic stunts on poles are often held in Malaysia and this is one dance where Malaysia has excelled. At the 8th Genting World Lion Dance Championship 2008 which was held in Genting Highlands, Malaysia; the Kun Seng Keng Lion Dance Troupe from Malaysia once again emerged champions. Twenty-six teams from Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Australia, Mauritius, Great Britain and America took part in this competition. The Kun Seng Keng Lion Dance Troupe from the town of Muar in Johor have won numerous lion dance competitions worldwide and are often acclaimed as the "World Lion King!"

Mama Mia! - Thank You for The Music And The Memories

Mama Mia! The Smash Hit Musical which had a successful run from December 17 2008 to January 4 2009 at the Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur will certainly be remembered as one of the most entertaining musicals to hit our shores. The musical played to wildly enthusiastic audiences at all its sold-out performances. Among those who watched the musical were royalty, dignitaries and the glitterati. Their Royal Highnesses, the King and Queen of Malaysia attended one of the shows. So did our prime minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his wife Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah. Our deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor were also there as were several other VIPs.

Mama Mia! The Musical has been seen by more than 30 million people in 160 cities in 8 languages around the world. Audiences all over the world have fallen in love with the characters, story and the songs of ABBA that have made Mama Mia! such a hit. In fact due to the overwhelming response to the musical in Malaysia, 4 extra shows had to be added. For about 3 weeks, some 33,000 Malaysians (and others) got to experience the charm and magic of Mama Mia! Malaysians, who are generally a reserved lot, discarded their inhibitions and stood up to sing, clap and dance during the shows. Way to go! It felt good to see so many people really enjoying themselves and having fun. To the cast of Mama Mia! - thank you for the music, thank you for the memories!

A total of RM1.2 million was raised from the Charity Night and contributions from Star Foundation and Capitaland. In spite of the economic downturn, many caring Malaysians dug deep into their pockets to donate for a worthy cause. Which proves that Malaysians are generous and really do have a heart of gold. The money collected was channelled to 10 charitable organizations, amongst them the National Heart Institue Foundation, Hospis Malaysia, The Befrienders Kuala Lumpur and HOPE Worldwide Malaysia.

Viennese Ball 2008 Kuala Lumpur - 5 Lucky Couples Chosen To Attend Vienna Opera Ball

The Viennese Ball 2008 which was held on October 25 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre was a truly spectacular event. More than 700 persons amongst them royalty, dignitaries and socialites attended the social function. Those present included the Royal Patron of the ball, Yang Amat Mulia, Tunku Naquiyuddin Tuanku Ja'afar, Regent of the State of Negri Sembilan and His Excellency Dr Donatus Koeck, the Austrian Ambassador to Malaysia. The ball was held in aid of the Yayasan Tunku Naquiyuddin and Pure Life Society charity foundations. This is the second time the Austrian Embassy in Malaysia is organizing the ball (www.vienneseball.my) after the resounding success of the one held last year.

At the cocktail reception there was a performance by young musicians from the Ann Perreau Music Studio, Austria who charmed everyone with a splendid show despite their young ages. During dinner, there was a haute couture fashion show by Malaysian designer Melvin Lam. This was followed by a piano recital by Austrian pianist Professor Johann Turek. Renowned soprano Marcelo Cerno, accompanied by the Ambassade Orchestra Vienna also gave a splendid performance. Josef Dolinsky and Raffaela Pegani, two of the principal dancers from the Ballet School of the Vienna State Opera delighted the audience with a polka, waltz and czardas (Hungarian dance) performance.

One of the highlights of the Viennese Ball was the introduction of the 53 debutantes and the opening dance by the debutantes and their partners. A debutante was by tradition an upper class girl in Europe who had come of age and is to be formally introduced or who makes a debut at a ball to announce her eligibility to other men. The debutantes who were immaculately dressed in white ballgowns and their partners who looked resplendent in tailcoats danced the Polonaise, Quadrille and the Viennese Waltz. Five of the best couples were chosen to attend the Vienna Opera Ball in Austria in February 2009. They were:-

1. Jonathan Fam & Ellya Sam

2. Samuel Sum & Chew Su Fen

3. Jan Zwiefelhofer & Theresa Ahrens

4. Syed Amir Faisal Syed Ali & Sasha Leong

5. Surendaran Chandra Sekaran & Alicia Thooi

Debutante co-ordinator Selma Skriegner said - "We weren't just looking at how well they did the Viennese Waltz. We also had to see if they were good dancers, whether they could do the other dances like the Cha Cha Cha, Rumba, Foxtrot and Rock & Roll. Dance instructor Reinhard Polt who was very pleased with his charges, quipped - "They performed very very well. And I think they loved it, they've enjoyed this Viennese Ball!" His Excellency Dr Donatus Koeck said he hoped that the Viennese Ball will be a yearly event here and that Malaysians can get more interested in organizing it. "Its quite a huge task for a small embassy like mine" he added.

Johann Sebastian Strauss And The Viennese Waltz

The Vienna Operetta Orchestra will be staging a performance on November 1 2008 at 8.30 pm at the Auditorium Majlis Bandaraya in Shah Alam, Selangor. Under the baton of conductor Siegfried Andraschek, together with featured vocalists Michael Suttner (tenor) and Izabela Labuda (soprano), the orchestra will perform favourites composed by the great composers like Johann Sebastian Strauss and Franz Lehar. The orchestra will be joined on stage by local singer and actress Amy Mastura. Together they will be entertaining the audience to an evening of authentic Viennese song and dance.

Franz Lehar (born 1870) was an Austrian of Hungarian descent. He is best known as a composer of operettas; the most famous of which is "The Merry Widow". Besides operettas he also wrote sonatas, marches and waltzes including the popular "Gold And Silver". Lehar died in 1948 in Bad Ischl near Salzburg where he is also buried. Johann Sebastian Strauss (1825-1899) was an Austrian composer well known for his waltzes. Besides the waltz, Strauss also wrote polkas, marches and operettas. Die Fledermaus which was composed by Strauss in 1874 remains the quintessential Viennese operetta.

It is of course the waltzes for which Strauss is most famous for. Known as the "Waltz King", Strauss composed more than 60 waltzes, amongst them the Blue Danube Waltz, Tales From The Vienna Woods Waltz, Emperor Waltz, Voices Of Spring Waltz, Wine, Woman And Song Waltz and Artist's Life Waltz. It must be remembered that the great waltzes were published in concert, not dance arrangements and the original compositions are generally not suited for dancing the International Viennese Waltz due to the tempo changes, pauses and long playing time. The Blue Danube, Tales From The Vienna Woods and Emperor have a playing time of more than 10 minutes each!

The versions of the great waltzes that people dance to nowadays have been rearranged by other musicians, abridged to about 3 minutes playing time and set to strict Viennese waltz tempo. Several modern songs have of course been composed with strict Viennese waltz tempo. My favourite is "A Summer Place", whether it is the instrumental version by the Percy Faith Orchestra or the one sung by Andy Williams. There is something very special about this song that can evoke strong emotions for me. Whenever I hear this song being played in a dance hall I just have to step out on to the floor with my partner and dance the Viennese waltz. It's just pure bliss! Happy Dancing!
